FileMaker Server

An important consideration is which Operating System FileMaker Server can run on, only the following are certified to run FileMaker Server.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition with Update* (64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard Edition* (64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise Edition* (64-bit)
  • Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11* (64-bit)
  • Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10* (64-bit)

* Version stated is the minimum requirement. The software may also work with later versions certified by FileMaker, Inc.

Please Note: Windows Small Business Server is NOT listed, FileMaker Server is not certified to run on Small Business Server of any version. For a complete list of certified Operating Systems, please refer to System Requirements for FileMaker Server.

Another very important consideration is the hardware you choose as it can have a significant impact on the performance of FileMaker Server. For optimum performance FileMaker Server should be set up on a DEDICATED SERVER GRADE MACHINE with fast hard drives and strong processors. Since this machine will be hosting your database, directing all data traffic, and saving your backups it is important to make sure that this is a genuinely solid unit. The hardware you choose for your installation of FileMaker Server will have a significant impact on performance and reliability.

There are five primary components to consider for FileMaker Server Hardware and are listed here in order of importance:

  • Use a dedicated machine / system for FileMaker Server: FileMaker Server should be installed and run on a dedicated machine whose sole purpose is to be used as a database server.
  • The Disk Sub-System– the most intensive activity is reading and writing data. This will have the greatest impact on speed.
    • Upgrade from SATA drives at 7200 RPM to SCSI or SAS drives at 15000 RPM, SSD drives are the best.
    • Upgrade to RAID configuration to increase disk I/O performance, RAID 5 is optimal followed by RAID mirrored and 3rd best is multiple drives.
  • Processor Speed and Number of Processors
    • FileMaker Server does calculations prior to sending data to the workstations to minimize network traffic. Give your server some power to do this work efficiently, a little investment here will pay dividends. Please be aware that with an increasing number of users, the higher the number of processor cores are needed.
  • Amount of Memory
    • Not just memory, but cache as well. We recommend 16GB of RAM.
  • Network Interface Components
    • Data must flow efficiently between the server and the workstations. Give the data a fast path to enhance performance.
    • This means that you should be running on a gigabit ethernet system.

Please be aware that your data can be your most prized business asset and any down time will have adverse effects on your business.

With this being said, we do have clients using workstation grade equipment that functions fine, but speed, performance and reliability could suffer and you could be at a greater risk of data loss and corruption. We have other small firms running FileMaker Server on their file server which has served them well knowing that there is a noticeable performance hit as more and more data is sent and received from the one computer.

Do also please be aware that any other services and software being hosted and running on a shared server can affect FileMaker Servers functionality and performance.

FileMaker Pro (Workstations and Laptops)

Almost any computer that is less than 3 years old will be just fine. If your computer has the horse power to run CAD applications it will work fine running FileMaker Pro. We recommend a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or greater. Hopefully you will have a machine with an Intel® dual or quad core processor.

To be able to run FileMaker Pro you have a few options:

  • Windows 10 Pro Edition*
    Windows 10 Enterprise Edition*
  • Windows 8.1 Standard Edition*
    Windows 8.1 Pro Edition*
  • Windows 7 SP1 Professional Edition*
    Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate Edition*
  • Mac OS X 10.11*
  • Mac OS X 10.10*

*Version stated is the minimum requirement. This software may also work with later versions certified by FileMaker, Inc. For a complete list of certified Operating Systems, please refer to System Requirements For FileMaker Pro.
