For optimum performance FileMaker Server should be set up on a DEDICATED SERVER GRADE MACHINE with fast hard drives and strong processors. Since this machine will be hosting your database, directing all data traffic, and saving your backups it is important to make sure that this is a genuinely solid unit. Please be aware that your data can be your most prized business asset and any down time will have adverse effects on your business.
With this being said, we do have clients using workstation grade equipment that functions fine, but speed, performance and reliability could suffer and you could be at a greater risk of data loss and corruption. We have other small firms running FileMaker Server on their file server which has served them well knowing that there is a noticeable performance hit as more and more data is sent and received from the one computer.
Do also please be aware that any other services and software being hosted and running on a shared server can affect FileMaker Servers functionality and performance.
Almost any computer that is less than 3 years old will be just fine. If your computer has the horse power to run CAD applications it will work fine running FileMaker Pro. We recommend a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or greater. Hopefully you will have a machine with an Intel® dual or quad core processor.
